An electric energy meter is a device that measures the amount of electricity consumed. It calculates and records this consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
The different categories of energy meters are:
- The tariff meter is located at the electrical grid connection point. Its data is directly used in the electricity billing process.
- The sub-meter is installed on a secondary electrical circuit where energy consumption is a key concern for the installation, typically for the purpose of energy optimization or targeted monitoring.
Modern electric energy meters provide a wide range of electrical data in addition to energy consumption, using various communication media and protocols.
